Trustee Code of Conduct

Trustee Code of Conduct

Ontario school boards are governed by elected trustees. Trustees represent their communities and support public education.

Trustees are expected to act honestly and follow high ethical standards. The Code of Conduct explains the rules and expectations they must follow.

Ontario Regulation 312/24 sets out required rules for every board’s Code of Conduct. Boards can add more rules, as long as they do not conflict with the regulation.

Integrity Commissioner

The Education Act (section 218.3) and Ontario Regulation 306/24 (Integrity Commissioners and Process for Alleged Breaches of the Code of Conduct) establish how Codes of Conduct are enforced.

The Board appoints an Integrity Commissioner—an independent, impartial person responsible for reviewing complaints about possible breaches of the Code of Conduct.

If a complaint is made, the Integrity Commissioner investigates and determines whether a breach has occurred. If a breach is found, the Commissioner may recommend or impose appropriate sanctions in accordance with the legislation.

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board has appointed ADR Chambers, as the Integrity Commissioner as per Ontario Regulation 306/24: Integrity Commissioners and Process for Alleged Breaches of the Code of Conduct.
